Kirstenbosch Bonsai Show 2010

Every year the Cape Bonsai Kai has exhibited member's bonsai trees at the beautiful and internationally reknown Kirstenbosch Gardens. The exhibition is just before Christmas and is exceptionally well attended. You will find many trees from top bonsai artists on display as well as a collection of Suiseki, natural stone appreciation. Beginners in the club are encouraged to display their trees also so you can see how trees start off and can be developed over years of love and care. A large sales area will provide you with all you need to get started should you wish to take up the rewarding art of bonsai. Experienced growers are on hand should you wish to ask questions and there are regular talks and workshops which run during the 3 days which the exhibition is open to the public. Hope to see you there in 2011.

Random Bonsai Tip

When a tree has reversed taper or a narrowed 'waistline' above the nebari, you could do an airlayering just above the narrow section; or you could damage the cambium layer by either hammering gently with a mallet or by piercing the bark right into the cambium with a sharp object eg. scissors or an awl. You could also make deep incisions along the grain of the bark, where the healing process will cause scarring which would then thicken the trunk.
