Cape Bonsai Kai August 2015 Newsletter

From the President

Trevor Venables

Dear CBK Member,

Winter is still with us although there are some signs of an early Spring with unusually warm days. Despite this, most of my deciduous trees have still not started to show signs of growth. Perhaps the trees are expecting a late cold snap!! We certainly can do with plenty more rain, otherwise severe water restrictions could be imposed.

The potting season has arrived and to assist members, potting workshops have been arranged at Gail's and Rudi's nurseries. These will be ideal opportunities to pot your trees and a selection of pots will be for sale. Whenever I re-pot at home I never seem to have the right pot to hand to bring out the best in the tree. A wide choice is available at the nurseries. Remember though that the tree, whether deciduous or evergreen, will by showing the onset of growth, tell you when to re-pot. Make sure you have all the potting materials available.

Enjoy the potting season.

Another reminder - ABC 4 is coming !

Cheers,

Trevor

Random Bonsai Tip

Straightening training wire - For those who don't know and for those who have forgotten - to straighten training wire that has been removed from a tree, grasp each end of the wire with a pair of pliers and jerk apart. Alternatively, grasping one end of the wire in a vice, and the other with pliers is much more effective as then it is possible to rub the shaft of a screwdriver up and down the wire getting rid of the small bumps.
