How to prevent branch splitting

Q: My tree has a forked branch. Recently in a storm, this became split. Should I tie it up in any way to prevent further splitting?

A: Look at your tree carefully. If it is a very essential branch which has split, you could try to clean up the ripped bark and bind it into place with raffia and seal it with Treeseal. This would have to be handled like an actual graft. On the other hand, a ripped branch will be weak at this point for many years to come and it might be better to remove it completely. Clean up the wound with a sharp knife and this may then be carved into a feature of the tree. Always treat large cuts and wounds with Treeseal.
